Side by Side

On the brink

Mark and Louise had friends who did not realise the seriousness of what they were getting into until too late. This is quite normal as those being radicalised are secretive about what they are doing.

Imagine you had been friends with Mark and Louise. What would you have done?

Avoid it?

When a friend's interests and views move away from yours, you might cool off the friendship and spend time with friends you agree with more.

There is a downside to this - it leads to small groups that think alike. You may be happy that your views are not challenged and your friend will be very happy that their new views are not being challenged. But remember: you are no longer influencing others or hearing other views. Even more importantly, you are letting your friend down.

Debate it?

If your friends have extreme views then you might want to talk to them about it. They won't want to talk if you are rude about their views. But you don't need to agree with them to respect their view.

If you are going to talk about these things, you need a good understanding of British values. Giving up on those values is where extremists go wrong.

Report it?

If you think a friend has been radicalised, it is important to tell someone. All education and training organisations have a staff member who you can raise this with. This might be the safeguarding officer or learner support..

There are specialist organisations and people who work to deradicalise people who have been targeted.

You can find out more about who to contact by selecting the question mark on the top right of the screen at any time.
