What liberties do you have?
In the past and even in some countries today there are many things you could not do. Take a closer look at some of the things you are free to do in Britain today.
Express your religious belief
In Britain, you can follow any religion or no religion. Not only that, you are free to go to your place of worship, celebrate holidays, wear religious symbols and clothing and talk about your religion in public.
There are places in the world where you could go to prison if you have the wrong religion (or no religion).
Criticise the religious practices of others
You are allowed to criticise other people's religious views and practices. It is important that you do this respectfully, without encouraging hatred or violence. Debate or argument about religion is allowed in Britain.
Make jokes about people
Where would Britain be without its humour?
Just as we love to celebrate people's differences, sometimes we like to mock them. Pointing out the funny side of things can help us to learn about difference and help debate.
Jokes can be offensive and just because you are free to say something, it doesn't mean that you should. It is very important that you don't use hateful language or encourage violence.
Complain about the police
We are free to complain about how we are treated by the police. There is even an organisation which exists just to investigate our complaints.
This freedom is vital. It ensures that everyone is subject to the rule of law - including the police!
Go anywhere you want
As long as we don't cause damage or break the law we are free to go to any public space. This freedom allows us to go to work, college and shops and to use public transport.
This liberty is also sometimes used as a way of protesting peacefully.
Criticise the government
We are all free to say what we like and what we don't like and this includes complaining about the government.
This freedom is an essential part of our democracy. If we couldn't say what we thought of our government, they would find it much easier to make decisions that were not good for us.
